I learned early that the most important thing in life is a good story.” And in the prefatory note to his classic memoir, This Boy's Life, Tobias Wolff writes: “I have been corrected on some points, mostly of chronology. Last fall I read This Boy's Life by Tobias Wolff as part of a memoir class taught by the lovely and talented Peggy Millin. Memoirs vary greatly in how much reflection they have. I have many favorite memoirs, and usually the one I like best is the one I'm currently reading, but I do have some I revisit often, ones that bring a smile to my face just seeing their covers, old friends I never get tired of passing time with. I was surprised at how good that novel was because Wolff (if he is known — and more people should read him) is better known for his short stories and this memoir. The Liar's Club: A Memoir by Mary Karr. Many of the memoirs that line my bookshelves I've not yet read, and that's okay, even though my Tobias Wolff, This Boy's Life: A Memoir. It is a rather grim, yet darkly funny coming-of-age memoir about a boy that lives in a difficult environment that he seeks to escape. I just finished reading This Boy's Life: A Memoir . She paints a funny picture of an otherwise disturbing scene. Some, like This Boy's Life, read like novels, with very little Voice of Experience or “story” in Gornick's sense. So I finally pulled This Boy's Life off the shelf. In our class discussion about the memoir This Boy's Life, I found out valuable information about certain allusions, themes, character relationships, and symbols/motifs. Mary weathers her childhood in an east Texas oil town with an alcoholic father and an oft-married mother. Primarily known as a writer of memoirs – most notably This Boy's Life – and short stories, Wolff has also garnered praise for his two novels as well.
